Beginning Knitting – Starts this May 10, 2012!

This class is designed to teach basic knitting skills. Minimum skills covered: casting on, binding off, knit stitch, and purl stitch. The class will also cover decoding yarn labels and basic pattern reading. Class fee does not include materials. Please arrive a few minutes early before the first day of class.

Thursdays, 7:00-8:30pm, 5/10-5/31. Fee: $75

Your First Sock – This Saturday, May 12!

You will learn to make a basic baby sock in this class, using double point needles. This is a four hour class. Student must be able to cast-on, knit, purl, work ribbing, and decrease using both ssk and k2tog. This class does not teach the kitchener technique.

Saturday, 1:00-5:00pm, 5/12. Fee: $55

Introducing Summer Classes for Kids!

Summer vacation is just around the corner and we’re busy making plans for fiber fun with kids!

Knitting Basics for Kids
Pick up sticks! Kids will learn the knit stitch and start a simple project. Some students may also learn to purl. Differentiated instruction allows each student to move at their own pace. Ages 7 & up.
Tues. – Fri., 1:00-3:00pm, 6/12-6/15. Fee: $75

Crochet Basics for Kids
Get your kid hooked on crochet! We’ll start with a simple crochet scarf and explore basic stitches. Ages 7 & up.
Tues. – Fri., 1:00-3:00pm, 6/19-6/22. Fee: $75

Felting Basics for Kids
From wet felting to beginning needle felting, we’ll explore the fun of turning fiber into fun projects. Ages 7 & up.
Tues. – Fri., 1:00-3:00pm, 6/26-6/29. Fee: $75

Spinning Basics for Kids
We’ll explore basic drop spinning techniques in this class, designed for students aged 10 &up.
Tues. – Fri., 1:00-3:00pm, 7/10-7/13. Fee: $75

Sweater Knitting Basics for Kids
Knit a sweater for a doll or teddy bear. Ages 10 &up. (Younger students may attend with instructor approval.)
Tues. – Fri., 1:00-3:00pm, 7/17-7/20. Fee: $75

Weaving Basics for Kids
Learn to weave on a rigid heddle loom. Students will learn to warp a loom and practice plain weave weaving technique. Ages 10 & up.
Tues. – Fri., 1:00-3:00pm, 7/24-7/27. Fee: $75

Crochet Tam for Kids
Learn to crochet a pretty top down tam. Ages 10 &up.
Tues. – Fri., 1:00-3:00pm, 8/7-8/10. Fee: $75

Let Peace Begin With Me

Sandi took on a mission for the coming year, to bring peace into the world in a very particular way. Given that we are fiber artists, she wanted to make this into something tangible. She had long wanted to knit Fiber Trends’ Peace Shawl. This beautiful design by the inestimable Evelyn Clark features trees and people holding hands with the word “Peace” knitted into the very edging. Since when endeavoring to create change, the first place to look is to ourselves, Sandi decided to knit this shawl for herself. When this is finished she will cast on a new shawl, probably a different design, for someone who is close to her, for their comfort and healing. Thus peace ripples out. When that is finished, she’ll cast on another shawl, this time for someone she doesn’t know. And so the work ripples out to ever widening circles, a chain reaction of peaceful wishes going out into the world.

Nathania was so taken with the idea that she has decided to join along. She’s beginning with the Evenstar Shawl by Susan Pandorf. Both shawls were cast on at Winter Solstice 2011 (in the Northern Hemisphere), and the project will continue until Winter Solstice 2012.

Would you like to join us? As Sandi said in her blog post about it, “Knitted, crochet, felted, woven, sewn, stitched, using whatever technique speaks to your spirit, create something that conveys Love and warmth, seed the Light of Peace in yourself, and then reach out. It doesn’t matter how many pieces you make, nor how quickly, it is the intent that counts. Peace, begin with me.”
